What is a processor?

So what is a processor? A processor is basically the brain behind your computer. Fundamentally a processor is the logic circuitry that responds to and processes the basic instructions that you give your computer. The processor fetches, decodes, executes, and writes back given instructions. Simple isn’t it?

Because a single processor can only do so much at a time, it’s usually an advantage to have multiple processors to speed up the work done. Most processors today are multi-core. Meaning the processor contains two chips under the same CPU. This is mainly to enable multi-tasking, enhance performance and reduce power consumption.

Processor choice varies depending on usability. One person’s choice for a processor varies from another user altogether. The final decision really depends on what you’re planning to use your PC or laptop for.

The two main competitors in the processor market are Intel and AMD.

For this article, we will speak on a few examples of processors and their best uses. Let’s talk about 3 types of Intel processors: The Core i3, Core i5 and the Core i7.

There are two types of processors in the market: Intel and AMD.

Types of processors and their uses.

We have broken down the types of Intel Core processors depending on your usage.

Small processors.

Small processors have generally been used for simple tasks and are suitable for perhaps individuals that travel or are on the road for long periods of time. They last the user through long intervals. They are lower-powered and used for things like emailing and not much else. An example is the Netbook made by Intel. Usually contains 1.6 or 1.66GHz processors.

Mainstream Models.

Mainstream models can handle basically anything you challenge them with; be it handling Video editing, Coding, Music creations, Programming or Watching movies. The Central Processing Unit of these models have two chips i.e. is Dual-core.

CPU speed includes 2.2GHz, 2.4GHz, and 3.4GHz

Gaming Models.

Gaming model processors either have Fast Duo Core processors or Quad-Core processors. Only these can handle large volumes of processing at once.

Major examples include AMD Turion x2. And Intel’s Intel Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Quads, and the new Core i7.

Which processor is best for you?
